Malley loves the ocean and is now completely hooked on snorkeling every morning.
Before everyone is awake, he sits here staring at his new love.
Growing up, I went to the doctor for my heart. It seemed to have a flair for the dramatic, twinging in pain at the most inconvenient times. The doctors, of course, ran every test imaginable and eventually put me on beta blockers, which finally eased the pain with every breath.
Fast forward to when I reached child-bearing age and got pregnant with my little miracle, Ezekiel. Those beta-blockers became my trusty sidekicks, especially when I needed to avoid passing out while driving.
Morning Bible study time and optional photo bomb moment.
With each pregnancy, the dosing needed to be increased. Eventually, the amount I was taking was too much while pregnant.
Can we be super honest about medications? They do not cure; they cover up.
In all that time on medication, no doctor was ever able to explain why my heart would twinge with pain so often.
This morning, I woke up to this on the table, "I love you, Care!" made out of coral.
Two more pregnancies and my midwives wouldn't work with me if I were on medication; this forced me to do my own research and "cure" myself.
Here's what I discovered: The heart is a muscle that needs essential minerals to work well. Potassium helps keep a steady rhythm, calcium is vital for muscle contractions, sodium maintains fluid balance, and iron is crucial for oxygen transport. Magnesium is super important, too, as it helps the heart relax and contract, produces energy, balances electrolytes, and keeps blood pressure in check. These minerals keep the heart healthy and prevent problems like irregular rhythms and high blood pressure.
Quadruple solitaire, anyone? A favorite pastime after lunch.
My body wasn't deficient in beta-blockers; it was seriously lacking in crucial minerals, especially magnesium. Once I fixed my diet and took a high-quality mineral supplement, the problems disappeared forever.
I no longer take those supplements; once my baseline was raised to a healthy level, it's been easy to maintain while on a high-quality diet.
Fast forward to this week. Two of my teen girls came to me separately with heart pains that had them both doubling over and fearful for their lives. When the pain in your heart is really high, it's super scary.
My two cuties that came to me with heart twinges
We've been swimming in the pool every day since we've been here and drinking the tap water, which is full of chlorine. Chlorine binds to magnesium, depleting your resources. The result? The hard-working muscle, your heart, is less than pleased.
