We call them the "twins" even though they are three years apart. They're inseparable, finish each other's sentences, and rarely have opposing views. For years now, we've joked that they are joined at the hip and will one day have to get married on the same day so the other twin won't be left alone for any period of time.
That was met with an emphatic "No way!" but only because the wedding style couldn't be agreed upon. Bethany (17 and in jeans tonight) will marry someone exotic who will sweep her off her feet with romance. They will spend endless nights having candle-lit dinners in their new home, saying nothing, just staring intensely into each other's eyes. When they talk, it will be about planning their next romantic getaway. Their life will move slowly and methodically, calculating and savoring every moment. Every trinket will be saved and carefully placed in a special place of honor. Not even the napkin he used to draw an ornate heart with the words, "I love you, Bethany Joy, you are my one true love." will ever be thrown away. It's important to note their home will be immaculate, the epitome of cleanliness.
Rebekah (14 and in a dress tonight) is "the girl next door." When she falls in love, he'll wear cowboy boots and say, "Yes, ma'am," to every woman he encounters while tipping his hat. She will happily wear his hoodie because it smells like him, and she will steal his Stetson and look like a million bucks wearing it. He will fall madly in love with her for stealing his hoodie and Stetson and never ask for it back; quietly, he will go out and get another hat, which she will let him wear most of the time. She will muck the stalls and get elbow-deep during calving season. She smiles from ear to ear while covered in farm grime and stands by his side no matter how demanding the workload is. She will count herself blessed by the work.
Back home, the twins spend every second together walking and talking. We have a grooved track in our backyard where they beat down a path, putting endless miles on it daily. Within minutes of them waking up, they are outside, walking and talking. When asked why they walk so much, they respond, "Because when we sit down, we end up staring at each other in awkward silence. For some reason, when we walk, the conversation just happens."
And so it is here in Hawaii. They wake up and begin walking until the sun goes down, and they fall asleep. Each day, they probably walk 10-15 miles, and they spend no less than five hours walking and talking.
The grounds at this resort aren't huge, so about every five to ten minutes, they cover every square inch of this property and sometimes the property across the wash. They are well known here, and everyone has given them the nickname "The girls that never stop walking." Since talking is the objective and walking is how it is accomplished, you might be wondering, "What do they talk about?" to which they will reply, "Stuff and things."
So you see, there must be a double wedding, and their properties must join. Neither one of them knows what to do if their feet stop moving. And if there isn't a double wedding and joint property, then the men they marry must love walking. All. Day. Long.
Their final lap of the evening...until it starts all over again bright and early tomorrow morning.
