21 Days for 25 Years - Day 18

Ah, Maui—beautiful beaches, stunning sunrises, and... getting stuck in the sand with your candy apple red Dodge Charger? Yep, that's precisely what happened to us on one of those "let's be adventurous" mornings.

It all started with the idea of catching an early swim at mile marker 14. The sun started peering over the horizon, and the ocean was calling our names. So, naturally, Bill and I thought it'd be a brilliant idea to park just off the road right onto the beach. What could possibly go wrong? Everyone else was parked there.

Picture this: the ocean beach was empty, the waves were gently crashing, and we were feeling like the king and queen of the island, cruising in our sleek muscle cars. We found the perfect spot, parked, and were just about to jump out when we noticed something wasn't quite right. The tires—oh, those glorious tires—started sinking into the sand.

I'm not one to panic, but keeping calm is hard when your car is suddenly half-buried on the beach. I thought, "No problem, I've got this," and started doing the forward-backward dance with the gas pedal. After several attempts and lots of sand flying everywhere, I freed my car. Victory!

But poor Bill… his Charger wasn't budging an inch. He tried everything—rocking the car, turning the wheels, and even pushing it (which is hilarious to watch when the car weighs as much as a small elephant). But that Charger was not moving. It was as if the sand had decided it wanted a souvenir, and Bill's car was it.

After our failed attempts (and plenty of laughter on my end), we had to admit defeat. At that moment, a truck of construction workers pulled in behind us and commented, "Aloha! Stuck?"

Bill sighed, "Yeah. I'm stuck good."

The driver smiled and said, "It happens all the time here. When I first moved here, I got my truck stuck on this beach, and a construction truck stopped to tow me out. It's just the island way. And now it's my turn to help you out."

Eventually, Bill's car was pulled free from the sandy clutches of the beach. He tried to give the men a hundy, but they refused, again saying, "This is the island way." then they drove off to their work site.

Lesson learned: Dodge Chargers and beach sand do not mix—no matter how cool it seems at the time. But hey, at least we got a funny story out of it and a reminder that sometimes, the best adventures are the ones that don't go quite as planned.

Those grooves, lol. I wasn't kidding when I said we were sinking in the sand. The rest of our day at the beach was glorious.
