It's official. We've been here a week, and we finally went snorkeling today. I'm not sure what took us so long, except that resting and relaxing are very time-consuming.
On the one hand, I can't believe we're here for another two weeks, and on the other hand, it's going by too fast, and I am hardcore in the camp of, "Nooooooo! I'm not going home ever." I will say this: One week in Hawaii is not even close to being a long enough vacation. I'll let you know next week if two weeks is long enough. [Lifts imaginary Eight Ball to read, "Outlook not good."]
Thankfully, everyone in my family loves "before the sun comes up" early mornings. Everyone except that pesky teen/adult resident, which is just fine with me. It means every morning, I bounce on her bed like Anna from Frozen.
"Abby! Wake up! Wake up! Wake Up!
"The sky's awake, so I'm awake! So we have to play!"
"Do you wanna build a sandcastle?"
She loves it. <---sarcasm.
Okay, I love it.
We decided to take our first snorkeling trip to the protected Kapalua Bay, hoping for calm water and easy entry. We were not disappointed. Since most of my kids have never snorkeled, Bill took them out one at a time to get them used to wearing the face mask and breathing through a tube while avoiding crashing into the coral rocks.
They nailed it. Each of them would make their great-grandparents and grandparents very proud. We raised our own school of fish. Those not snorkeling spent the morning riding waves on boogie boards and chasing turtles.
We planned on island hopping to Oahu later in our trip to revisit Pearl Harbor and see the 'Iolani Palace, but we may stay here and swim every morning. We'll see. So far, the goal of relaxing and NOT having a packed schedule has been perfect and just what we all needed.
