Despite being jet-lagged from our recent trip, I decided to stick to my plan and kick off our homeschool year today. The early morning felt like it came too soon, and I wasn’t entirely sure if this was the best idea—starting school while still dreaming of sandy beaches and ocean waves? Probably not. But the commitment was made, so we dove in, whether we liked it or not. The kids, still groggy and clearly wishing they were back on vacation, managed to roll out of bed, joining me in this new adventure, even if we were all slightly out of sync.
As we worked through our lessons, it was painfully obvious that our brains were still in vacation mode. The usual enthusiasm was dimmed, and everything felt like it was moving in slow motion, as if time had been jet-lagged. But hey, there’s something to be said for tackling challenges head-on, even when you’re running on fumes.
Our favorite antioxidant drink was the real MVP of the day, keeping us somewhat energized and on track despite the lingering fog from our travels. Usually, I stick to 2-4 ounces of Ningxia Red a day, but today? Oh, it was definitely a 10-12 ounce kind of day. Honestly, I’m convinced that’s the only reason we survived the first day of school. Without it, I probably would’ve ended up face-planted on the table in a puddle of drool!
Looking back, kicking off the school year while still jet-lagged probably wasn’t my brightest idea, but hey, I’m nothing if not determined! Bless their tired little hearts, the kids tackled their lessons like champs, even if there were a few extra yawns along the way. Thankfully, we use The Good and the Beautiful curriculum, which makes learning super fun and engaging. The kids breezed through their lessons before lunchtime, giving us plenty of time to laugh, play, and desperately try to stay awake!
After wrapping up our first day back, we still had time to finish unpacking and relax, which felt like a minor miracle. We spent the rest of the day reminiscing about our adventures, all while easing back into our daily routine. It wasn’t perfect, and it certainly wasn’t easy. Still, we made it through with a mix of determination, NingXia Red, and a lot of patience.
Starting the school year with a bang—jet lag and all—might not have been the smoothest transition, but it’s one we’ll look back on and laugh about… eventually. For now, I’ll count it as a win that we survived the first day and that no one fell asleep mid-lesson. Not a bad start to the school year, all things considered!
